Continuing with his lessons into junior high school, Luis was privileged to study under Mike Viñas, who at the time was Ruben Blades’ bass player. Mike Viñas’ encouragement resulted in music becoming a top priority for Luis. Around this same time and through the promptings of a family friend (Robert Pope, bass), Luis began studying trumpet at the Jazz Mobile workshops under Eddie Preston and Jimmy Owens.

8:00 Squirrels From Hell - Rock - 8-9pm
Squirrels From Hell have been playing and recording in New York City for over thirty years. Starting out as a cover band, they quickly bought into the DIY movement of CBGB, Trude Heller’s, and Max’s Kansas City, and have performed only original material since that time. Since their 1980’s birth their music has become more sophisticated and their lyrics more, well, literate. Over the last ten years the influence of Larry Brown, their drummer and vocal arranger, has given a professional polish to songs that still explore the darker side of the human condition. The trio has been expanded to include sax, which adds yet another level of sophistication to a band once called “the lowest of the low-rent bands” by the Village Voice, but now celebrated by at least one critic as “the most powerful, majestic, and intellectually challenging band of our time.

10:00 Pork Chop Willie - Blues - 10pm-12am
Pork Chop Willie features Bill Hammer on lead guitar and vocals and Melissa Tong on fiddle and keys, joined by outstanding rhythm players from both Mississippi and New York. Pork Chop Willie focuses on the music of the North Mississippi Hill Country. Presenting a number of original songs and reinterpreting Hill Country classics, Pork Chop Willie forges a unique sound, merging the powerful rhythms of the Hill Country with the moving sounds of Melissa's fiddle. Their music is deeply emotional, often raucous, and always hip-shakin'." "The guitar solo provides that weird bittersweet soaring feeling attendant on falling in love, and the fiddle responds with the frenetic drive that underscores passion... The repetition of the guitar breaks open the soul, so the fiddle can get in the cracks as the rhythm section fills up the belly... It is just what New York City needs." -- Catherine A. Mulligan, BC BlogCritics

5:00 The Shrine Sunday Jazz Jam Session with Lu Reid - 5-8pm
Spontaneous Jazz does not happen at Lincoln Center...or BAM!!! It is still in Harlem, where my friends and I live it every day. All the musicians on these streets are stars. When I was a kid and I first heard the sweet language of that magical Jazz I was hooked for life. You just soaked it up and couldn't help but be moved by it as you walked the streets. I can still feel that kaleidoscope of sound, and I want to bring it to you each and every Sunday.
